Born in Vienna in 1811, Eugen von Guérard began travelling to Italy from an early age on. He took lessons in the late 1820s, at first in Rome and later in Naples and on Sicily. Having returned from Italy he attended the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Johann Wilhelm Schirmer and Johann Gottfried Schadow from 1840-1845. From an early point on he put his focus on landscape paintings. In 1852 he traveled to California first and continued his journey to Australia where he made his renowned landscapes illustrating the vastness of the Australian continent in an impressive coloring. Eugen von Guérard only returns to Germany for a short time in 1882. From that time on the artist, who died in his adopted country Australia in 1901, did not leave any biographic traces behind.
In terms of themes, Guérard's early work is dominated by the impressions made in his years in Italy. This work is also part of the classic paintings of southern Italian and Sicilian landscapes, which earned the artist much praise in successful academy exhibitions in Berlin, Leipzig and Lubeck. [CM].

Colors in very good and fresh condition. Minimal traces of rubbings due to the framing. Lower margin and upper right corner with tiny negligible color flaking. Minimal isolated retouchings in margin.
