Peter Nagel studied at the Hamburg School of Fine Arts. Together with two artist colleagues he founded the group 'Zebra' in 1965. Nagel wrote on that: "Me and my colleagues of the later group 'Zebra' rejected an abstraction that possessed too little commitment. Scenic and figurative subjects emerged from the then still Tachist structure, however, without allowing the object too much independence . By means of abstraction and deformation it was turned into a fantastic mythical creature that adapted willingly" (quoted after Hoeppner, no page). The child depicted in this monumental work is Nagel's nephew Kai.
