Just as many of his artist colleagues from the days of the “Brücke”, Pechstein was also forced to turn to ostensibly harmless topics during the years of National Socialism. Besides landscapes made during his summer stays on the coast of the Baltic Sea, he executes a lot of flower still lifes, which particularly empasize the decorative element which was always present in Pechstein’s painting. In this work the artist clearly set the focal point on the effect of the consolidated form, to which defined color fields are allotted. The central axis adds a special aura of a natural solidity to the composition, a popular component in those politically difficuzlt days. Pechstein seems to have particularly valued the earthen pitcher, which can be regarded as an additional symbol for an authentic affinity with nature, as it can also be foune on other flower compositions.
