Album amicorum. - Stammbuch of Johann von Bassen. 179 ll. with 40 entries.Straßburg and Paris, 1595-1601. With 4 figurative watercolours, 9 armorial watercolours, 1 stamped coat of arms (of August the Younger) as well as 5 ll. marble papers bound in. Contemp. calf with 4 thongs and punched gilt edges. Small oblong 8vo. (10 : 14,5 cm).
Splendid illustrated nobility album amicorum from the late 16th century. With entries, among others, by Joachim Friedrich duke of Liegnitz and Brieg; August the Younger, duke of Brunswick and Lüneburg (1579-1666; founder of the Duke August Library in Wolfenbüttel; with large armorial stamp); Andreas Ungnad, baron of Sonneck (with crest); Wilhelm Heinrich, lord of Bentheim; Wierich zu Dhaun, lord of Falckenstein; Christian lord of Waldeck zu Wildungen and Wolrad IV, lord of Waldeck zu Eisenberg; Georg von Fleckenstein, baron of Dagstuhl; Weikhard, baron of Auersperg (with crest); Carl baron of Zierotin (with crest); Tido von Inhausen und Kniphausen in Lütetsburg (with crest); Dodo von Innhausen und Kniphausen (1583-1636; important general in the Thrirty Years War); Heinrich Zahradetzky von Zahradek (with crest); Volrat von Watzdorff (with crest); Rudolph von Bünau; Philipp Wilhelm von Bernsau (with crest); Zdenko Brtnicz baron of Waldstein (with crest); Johann Eberhard von Dienheim, Johann Philipp von Dienheim and Philipp Heinrich von Dienheim; Caspar Bekheß (with crest); Conrad Dasypodius (1531-1600, mathematician and astronomer, constructed the astronomic clock of the Straßburg minster). - The watercolours show finely executed female figures in festive costumes, among them a figure with a folding, which reveals the undergarments, that is breeches and still shoes. The armorial miniatures in fine execution and in strong colours, with gold and silver and places. - Slightly stained in places, binding rubbed, spine brittle and with defective spots. All in all well-preserved. - A register of the entries attached, written by the previous owner baroness Elise Kressig-Warthausen (bound in the same format, together with the album amicorum in slipcase in same design).
Magnificently illustrated Album Amicorum of Johann von Bassen. Strasbourg and Paris, 1595-1601. 178 leaves with 42 entries by German noblemen, among them August the Younger, duke of Brunswick and Lüneburg (founder of the well-known library of Wolfenbüttel) with an entry from his student days in Strasbourg; further Dodo von Innhausen, general of the Thirty Years' War, and the constructor of the astronomical clock in the cathedral of Strasbourg, Conrad Dasypodius (cf. DSB III, 585). Contains 8 beautiful and elaborated blazoned coat of arms and 4 miniatures depicting female figures in festive dresses (one with movable part unveiling the breeches and stilt-shoes beneath the gown). Contemp. calf with gauffered gilt edges and thongs, 5 marbled leaves bound in. - Minor staining in places, spine damaged, else well-preserved. Attached an manuscript index by the baroness Elise Kressig-Warthausen (bound in same size, together with the Album in a marbled slipcase).
