“Les Baigneurs” is a group of sculpture notable for its playful lightness. It is the product of Niki de Saint Phalle’s changeover to an affirmative view of life, which is expressed in intense colors and bold contrasts. Her husband, the experimental artist Jean Tinguely, remarked on her brightly painted figures: “Niki’s polychromacy is the greatest impertinence there has ever been.” (quoted in: Barbara Hammann, in: Künstler. Kritisches Lexikon der Gegenwartskunst, Munich 1989, p. 7). [ME]
