The polysemic farewell that can be interpreted in this small work reveals in its very sketchiness Defregger’s consummate mastery of painting. Here he directs our attention to the relationship between the two people, with all extraneous detail left out. Thus an intimate scene has been created that says a great deal while concealing some things. [KD]
