Ernst Ludwig Kirchner
1880 Aschaffenburg - 1938 Davos
Weidende Kühe. 1920.
Watercolor and reed pen drawing.
With estate stamp of the Basel Kunstmuseum on verso (Lugt 1570 b) and with handwritten registration number "FDa/Bm8". On yellow-brown wove paper. 34 x 48,5 cm (13,3 x 19 in), the full sheet.
The work is documented in the Ernst Ludwig Kirchner Archive, Wichtrach/Bern.
PROVENANCE: Private collection South Germany.
An explosive drawing distinguished by the strongly gestural and emotive handling of line that is characteristic of Kirchner’s best drawings. In the work he did during his early years in Davos, much of the hectic pace of urban living is still apparent. The style of drawing remained fully adequate to adapting to new motifs. The cipher-like aspect of evocative motifs was retained in Kirchner’s early years in Switzerland although it would gradually yield to a more calming interpretation. [KD].
In very good condition. Side margins with minimal crease marks that have been smoothed.
