Erich Heckel
1883 Döbeln/Sachsen - 1970 Radolfzell/Bodensee
Landschaft bei Osterholz an der Flensburger Förde. 1921.
Gouache and Watercolor over chalk and charcoal drawing.
Signed and dated lower right. On laid paper. 45,5 x 58,2 cm (17,9 x 22,9 in), the full sheet.
The same motif was also used for the painting "Nordische Landschaft" (Vogt 1920/10) from 1920.
We are grateful to Mr. Hans Geißler for the kind help in cataloguing this lot.
PROVENANCE: Ruth Fisher, San Francisco (acquired around 1930).
Private collection (since around 1990).
Private collection South Germany.
In the years after the first world war, Erich Heckel devoted himself increasingly to watercolor painting. It would become one of the most important media in which he expressed himself during the National Socialist years and the 1950s that followed. The present work is still inspirited by the verve and expressive powers of the work Heckel produced before the first world war. The topography is spaciously outlined and plays in the dynamic handling of line in the framing trees a rather subordinate role. Nevertheless, the primal power of assured landscape design in the spirit of Expressionism still clearly resonate here. Heckel’s watercolors would subsequently be less original and powerful. [KD].
Colors in good and fresh condition. Left edge irregular, upper edge with few tiny surface defects. Slightly discolored. With a minor central crease, skilfully smoothed. In the upper centre minor break in the paper surface.
EUR: 9.000 - 12.000REGEL(7%)
US$: 12.276 - 16.368
