Gregorius I., Epistole ex registro beatissimi Gregorii Pape primi. With woodcut title border, large woodcut title and black-primed woodcut printer's device at the end. Venice, L. Soardus, 18 Dec. 1504 (title: 1505). New wooden boards with vellum pastedowns and 2 brass clasps, spine with leather covering using the old blindstamped material. Folio. 20 non-numb., 197 numb. ll.
Essling 1492 (with illustration of rhe title woodcut). - Sander 3274. - BM STC, French Books p. 314. - Edit 16 (online cat.) CNCE 21705. - Not in Adams. - Rare second edition of the famous Epistolae, the first in the 16th century. - The nice title woodcut depicts how pope Julius II issues the printer's privilege to Lazarus Soardus. - This important collection of correspondence is not only a great source for the history of these days, but it also had a major impact on the style of the curial letters for centuries. - Lacking the last blank leaf. - Carefully cleaned. Few ll. with inconspiciously restored marginal defects, title with 2 small traces of ink, first text leaf with crossed out early name entry, pastedown with erased stamp. All in all fine and broad-margined copy with the original book edge.
Rare second edition of the famous letters by pope Gregory I., the last of the four great fathers of the Western Church. With woodcut title-border, woodcut on title and black-on-white woodcut device at end. New wooden boards with calf spine (using the old blindpressed material) and 2 brass clasps. - Lacking the last blank. Carefully washed. Few leaves with unobtrusively restored marginal defects, 2 small inktraces to title, first text leaf with crossed out early inscription, pastedown with canceled stamp . Fine copy with broad margins and the initial book edge.
