With 2 large woodcut initials on the titles 1 genealogic tree and numerous, partly grotesque, woodcut initials. Paris, A. Vérard no date [around 1503/04]. Red morocco binding with giltstapmed armorial centrepiece ("Bibliothèque de Mello"), gilt lettering and gilt edges, inner boards of blue morocco with broad giltstamped border (signed "Duru 1859"). Folio. 6 non-numb. ll., 182 numb. ll. (1 blank); 8 non-numb. ll., 151 numb. ll. (erroneously paginated 251-402). French Bastarda. 2 columns.
Renouard/Moreau 246, 143. - Fairfax Murray 362 (with illstration of title). - Brunet III, 1504. - First and only French edition. - The date has been set by Renouard/Moreau on the basis of the printer's device. Translated from the manuscript by S. de Mamerot in 1458. The chronic was continued by E. Verneron up until 1362 after the author's death in 1278, and was increased by J. Castel, J. de Montreuil, R. Gaguin and J. de Troyes in the 15th century. "Das verbreitetste Geschichtsbuch des spätern Mittelalters" [transl.:"the most widely used history book of the middle ages."] (Wetzer/W. VIII, 934). The figurative and grotesque woodcut initials are worthwhile mentioning. - Copy thoroughly restored by the French book binder Hippolite Duru in a magnificenteinem binding from the collection of the baron Achille Seillière. His crest is shown in Olivier/Hermal 1189; cf. also ibidem 1130 on his biography. - Genealogy cropped close at sides, second part with stamp of a Bendedictine convent. Binding slightly scraped in places. All in all splendid copy.
First and only French edition of the chronicle, widespread in the Middle-Ages and the main source for the knowledge of the theologians during centuries. Of special importance for the legend of Pope Joan. 2 parts in 1 vol. With calligraphic grotesque woodcut initial on the title of each part, 1 woodcut genealogical tree, numerous small decorative woodcut initials, those of the second part in a similar calligraphic grotesque style, printer' s device on last leave. French bastard type, 2 columns. 19th cent. red morocco by Duru, gilt coat-of-arms "Bibliothèque de Mello" (Olivier/Hermal 1189), gilt edges and blue morocco pastdowns with gilt press à la dentelle. - A fine and carefully restored copy by H. Duru. The genealogical tree cropped close, second title with old stamp of a Bendedictine convent. Binding slightly rubbed. Splendid copy from the collection of Baron Achille Seillière (1813-73).
