Gletscher-Studie. Um 1900.
Good overall impression. Edges partly minimally unevenly trimmed. Minimally rubbed in places of the margin, due to the framing, partly with tiny colour losses. With a minor vertical crease mark.
Oil on canvas, laid onto wood.
Signed lower right. With inscription on verso. 52 : 36 cm (20,4 : 14,1 in). The great mastery of the artist and mountaineer Edward Theodore Compton is in creating a depiction of a mountain landscape with all its characteristic features in his very own atmosphere. His great sense of nature and his intimateness with the mountain’s light enable him to do so. The artist, who makes numerous studies while on trips through the mountains, depicts the snow-covered mountain in front of an ominous and beclouded sky in a swift and firm stroke of the brush. [NB]
