Dube H 528 I (of III). Dated and titled. With estate stamp of the Kunstmuseum Basel on verso (Lugt 1570 b) and the handwriten registration number "H 519 I". Rare, Dube does not mention an edition. On smooth wove paper. 62 : 25 cm (24,4 : 9,8 in). Sheet: 66,5 x 33,5 cm (26,2 x 13,2 in). After settling in Switzerland, Kirchner more and more discovers his liking for motifs in rural surroundings. It is the mountains and the farmers that are taken into his works' themes. The depicted female nude in its connectivity to the earth, its figure's strength and the strong limbs are a complete contrast to his nervous nudes originating from the days before World War I. The integration into the mountain landcape, as well as the frontal perspective underline the new and different view of the physical, of which Kirchner delivers a prime example with this work. This woodcut is a great example of Kirchner's unbroken creative power in his Davos days in terms of the composition's closeness and its straight formal expression. [KD]
