Ohne Titel. 1964.
PROVENIENZ: From the artist's estate.
In good condition. Edges minimally discoloured, due to the framing. Isolated negligible traces of rubbing. Tiny stain in upper left.
Oil on cardboard, covered with canvas.
Wöbkemeier 439. Signed and dated lower left. Once more signed and dated on the reverse. 46,2 : 29,2 cm (18,1 : 11,4 in). One of the few German artists whose work was crucially shaped by the 1920s, Walter Dexel returned after the Second World War to the abstract repertory of forms he had created. The continuity in his work is, however, deceptive. Now a graphic handling of line determined large parts of his compositions, which appear more strongly articulated in their basic structure. Virtually all curves have vanished and a stringent clarity of spatial articulation has become the determinant of the statement made. [KD]
