Bootswerft. 1920.
Edges with tiny paper blemishes, left edge with traces of glue. Lower left corner added, lower margin with soft crease mark. Right edge with hole and a slightly larger tear, backed with strip. With isolated minor handling creases and traces of rubbing. Discoloured.
Watercolour and pencil.
Signed and dated lower right. On brownish wove paper. 39,2 : 49,3 cm (15,4 : 19,4 in), the full sheet. Rudolf Jacobi, who first trained as a scene painter, studied from 1907 until 1914 at the Berlin Academy, where he was in the master class taught by Friedrich Kallmorgen. Between 1912 and 1915, Jacobi showed landscapes and vedute at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition, the exhibitions mounted by the Secession and the Academy and at the Munich Glass Palace. After the first world war, in which he served as a pilot, Jacobi settled in Berlin to freelance. In the years 1919-21 he often went to the Pomeranian and Schleswig coasts to paint. Our charming watercolour study of a wharf dates from that brief period. [NB]
