Signed, dated and titled lower right. On wove paper. 53,5 : 68 cm (21 : 26,7 in), the full sheet. In the years following the first world war, during which Heckel was re-orienting himself aesthetically, watercolours, which he painted while travelling, became increasingly important. The landscapes are almost always viewed as panoramas. In his mountain landscapes especially, Heckel strove, even in the medium of watercolour, for monumentality to a certain extent and this quality comes impressively into its own in our work. The colour contrasts of Heckel’s Expressionist years have yielded to a more moderate palette. A carefully chosen composition arrangement ensures that even Heckel’s watercolours do not fail to make the painterly impression intended as shown in his choice of large formats. [KD]
