Stadtansicht von München. 1956.
Minimally discoloured and with minor ripples. Sheet margins with isolated small paper losses and abrasions. Sheet edges with a few short tears, corners with minor crease marks. The reverse firmly mounted in passe-partout.
Watercolour, gouache and chalk.
Monogrammed, dated and barely legibly inscribed lower right. On wove paper. 43,8 : 62,3 cm (17,2 : 24,5 in), the full sheet. Friedrich Ludwig, who has often been described by art critics as a “consummate colourist” or “a born painter, who lived in coloured dreams”, lives up to his reputation in this vedute. An Expressionist of the second generation, Ludwig, too, suffered persecution under the National Socialist regime and was forbidden to exhibit his work. His painting did not receive the appreciation it so richly deserved until after his death, when much of his œuvre was rediscovered in 1984. [LB]
EXPERTISE: The work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of Friedrich Ludwig's works prepared by Prof. Sigurd Marien, London
PROVENIENZ: Private collection South Germany.
