Published by J.B. Neumann, Berlin
Woodcut in colours.
Dube H 242 b IV B (of IV B). Signed and dated. Copy aside from the edition of circa 80 unnumbered copies. On laid paper (with watermark "SLG"). 30,9 : 31,4 cm (12,1 : 12,3 in). Sheet: 50,4 x 43,7 cm (19,8 x 17,2 in). The years 1910 to 1914 brought Erich Heckel growing recognition. In 1911 Heckel settled in Berlin, spending the following summer on the Baltic coast. Under the spell of the austere scenery characteristic of that coast, he produced a great deal of work - including our extraordinary woodcut, in which, by using just a few, harshly gouged lines, the artist has brilliantly captured man and beast struggling to keep on their feet against the full brunt of a storm.
