Kokotte. Um 1925/30.
In good condition, colours still fresh. Partially minor superficial rubbings. With a Hungarian toll stamp on the reverse.
Coloured chalk, gouache and opaque white.
Signed lower left. Mounted on cardboard. 55 : 49,5 cm (21,6 : 19,4 in), the full sheet. Several influences are discernible in Hugo Schreiber’s expressive, poster-like compositions. Their closeness to the decorative art of Art Déco is unmistakable as are elements inspired by the Cubist period, which are particularly noticeable on the formal side, in the handling. Unlike his colleague Béla Kádár, who introduced a lyrical component into his paintings, Schreiber capitalises on the immediacy of the impact made by broad colour surfaces. [KD]
