Monica reclining in Chinese robe. 1985.
'His first work in metal, produced in 1983, marked the beginning of the most productive phase of Tom Wesselmann’s career. Most of these works are based on sketches that seemed to have been hastily jotted down: landscapes, still lifes, nudes. The drawings were electronically or manually transferred to sheets of aluminium or steel and the forms were cut out with a laser that was accurate to a millimetre. All essential elements of his earlier work are united here. The Metal Works link traditional motifs with an ultramodern manufacturing technique' (Thomas Buchsteiner, Tom Wesselmann 1959-1993, Ostfildern 1994, p. 46). [ME]
