Vollständiges und breitrandiges Exemplar mit allen Supplementen und Fortsetzungen, zudem von außergewöhnlicher Provenienz: Exemplar aus der Bibliothek des französischen Königshauses mit den Wappensupralibros von Louis XV. und Louis XVI. (Olivier/Hermal 2495, 2 und 2496). - "Buffon's Histoire appeared in 36 impressive volumes during his lifetime and was followed by 18 more under the guidance of Lacepede from 1788 to 1804, making it the most celebrated treatise on animals ever produced" (Dibner). - Buffon "was the first to present the universe as one complete whole and to find no phenomenon calling for any but a purely scientific explanation." Insgesamt wohl erhalten. In dieser Vollständigkeit und Ausstattung höchst selten.
First edition of Buffons great natural history. Royal copy of Louis XV and Louis XVI, complete set of 44 vols. and 1 atlas vol., with all supplements and continuations by Lacépède. Contains 3 engr. portraits, 1262 partly folding copperplates, 12 folding engr. maps, 24 engr. title vignettes (rep.), 3 folding tables and numerous engr. vignettes. Contemp. mottled calf with richly gilt spine and double label, covers with armorial centrepiece (Olivier/Hermal 2495, 2 and 2496). - Partly slight browning and foxing (only few leaves stronger), 3 leaves with crease, outer margins of the maps somewhat dusty. Minor rubbing or scraping to bindings (3 vols. stronger), outer extremeties of spine partly damaged. Else well preserved copy with broad margins.
