Pilz - Kopf. 1973/2012.
Oil on canvas.
Signed, dated "1973" as well as signed and dated "2012" on the reverse. 104.5 x 85 cm (41.1 x 33.4 in). [JS].
• In the years from 1964 to 1968, Wintersberger was a member of the legendary Berlin artist co-op and gallery "Großgörschen 35", which showed, among others, works by Markus Lüpertz, K. H. Hödicke and Bernd Koberling.
• With their new figurative art, Wintersberger and his fellow artists made such a strong point against the prevailing informal painting of the time that they would have a decisive influence on West German art way into the 1980s.
• Works from the 1960s and 1970s can be found in important public collections such as the Berlinische Galerie, the Städel Museum, Frankfurt am Main, and the Mercedes-Benz Art Collection, Berlin.
• In 2015, Wintersberger's work was part of the grand exhibition "German Pop" at the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt am Main.
PROVENANCE: From the artist's estate (with the estate stamp on the stetcher).
Private collection Switzerland (inherited from the estate).
LITERATURE: Mentioned and illustrated on http://www.lambert-maria-wintersberger.de/werke.php.
Good overall impression. With a small retouched spot in the bottom right and the bottom edge. With expertly retouched spots in the left below the mouth. With some slight tension cracks and pressure marks. The condition report was compiled in daylight with the help of an ultraviolet light and to the best of our knowledge.
