• His works are among the most striking examples of German Informalism.
• The characteristic style of his gestural-abstract works is based on, among others, influences from Asian calligraphy, American Abstract Expressionism and the artistic method of automatism.
• Sonderborg took part in Documenta II and III in 1959 and 1964, and in the Venice Biennale in 1964 and 1970.
