Dorfkirche (Village church). 1918.
Woodcut.
Signed and inscribed with the work number "1838". One of a few known artist proofs on different types of paper. On fine Japon. 20.9 x 26.9 cm (8.2 x 10.5 in). Sheet: 24,7 x 33,5 cm (9,7 x 13,1 in).
Lyonel Feininger assigned his woodcuts with their own work number, here "1838". The first two numbers indicate the year, the two following numbers refer to the print sequence within the year. [AR].
• Early, rare woodcut by the later Bauhaus master.
• Classical motifs meet modern forms and perspectives.
• Today the master of the modern woodcut is still known for his radical compositions split into geometric surfaces and straight lines.
• Copies of this print are extremely rare on the international auction market.
