Krüger L 123. Fechter L 112. Signed, dated and titled. On smooth. off-white wove paper. 27.8 x 38 cm (10.9 x 14.9 in). Sheet: 40,8 x 53,6 cm (16,1 x 21,2 in).
Sheet 9 from the series of the same name with 10 lithographs which were never released as an edition. The work shows the plot of the ballett mime "Carneval" that the Russian Ballett performed at the 'Theater des Westens' in Berlin on October 25, 1910 (cf. Krüger 114-124). Fechter mentions the scene as follows: "In the background on the right, Pierrot kneels and tries to embrace Colombine, who is defending herself. In the foreground on the left, Harlequin is dancing with raised hands." (Paul Fechter, Das Graphische Werk Max Pechsteins, Berlin 1921, p. 71). [AR].

• In these days the artists discovered the world of the circus, dance and theater.
• The complete "Karneval" series was shown in the exhibition "Graphische Arbeiten von Max Pechstein" at the Gutenberg-Kunsthandlung in Berlin in January 1912.
