Signed, dated and titled in lower margin. Monogrammed "H" in printing block. One of 8 known hand-made prints before the edition with date added in the printing block. On creme laid paper. 20.1 x 15.2 cm (7.9 x 5.9 in). Sheet: 34 x 28,7 cm (13,3 x 11,4 in).

• Expressive character head, powerfully carved into the wood.
• Very rare. One of only 8 known hand-made prints before the edition published in 1914 in the magazine "Das neue Pathos".
• Rare. From the first printing state before the date "07" was added to the printing block.
• Further early prints can be found in, among others, the Folkwang Museum, Essen, and the Städel Museum, Frankfurt a. M. Later prints are in the collection of the Brücke Museum, Berlin, the Brooklyn Museum, New York, and the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz.
PROVENANCE: Galerie Pels-Leusden, Berlin.
Hermann Gerlinger Collection, Würzburg (acquired from the above in 1985, with the collector's stamp on the reverse, Lugt 6032).

Slightly soiled in the broad margins as well as with slight traces of rubbing and creasing and some ink adhesions and stains from the printing. Primarily in the lower margin with horizontal creases from printing. Slightly irregularly browned.
