The large-format chalk drawings by Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, like the watercolors, are characterized by a strong graphic flow that determines the composition. The colors that Schmidt-Rottluff creates these works in are carried by a graphic framework that has both an isolating and an intensifying effect. Karl Schmidt-Rottluff may have found the motif in Sierksdorf in the Bay of Lübeck, where the great expressionist spent the summer months from 1951 to 1973 at the house of his fellow painter Günter Machemehl. A lively expressiveness combined with graphic verve are this work’s most outstanding features. [EH]
