Engel in der Laube. 1903.
Oil on cardboard.
Signed and dated "III. 03" in lower right. Titled on the reverse, presumably by Elsbeth Modersohn, the artist's daughter. With the written confirmation from Christian Modersohn from 1981. 55.8 x 40.8 cm (21.9 x 16 in).
• Atmopheric summer scene in the artist' garden in Worpswede.
• The work was made in connection with Modersohn's paintings "Elsbeth im Garten mit Glaskugel" (1903) and "In meinem Garten – Elsbeth mit Glaskugel" (1904, both at the Otto Modersohn Museum, Fischerhude).
• The putto in a rose trellis is an unusual motif in Modersohn's oeuvre.
We are grateful to Rainer Noeres, Otto Modersohn Museum, Fischerhude, for his kind expert advice.
PROVENANCE: Private collection Northern Germany.
"They planned their Worpswede garden together [..]. She didn't want wild growth. The paths were bordered by white carnations, while mallows and hollyhocks grew in the beds."
Rainer Noeres, Otto-Modersohn-Museum, Fischerhude, quoted from: Irene Jung, Der Bauerngarten. Eine norddeutsche Liebe, July 17, 2013, Hamburger Abendblatt online, https://www.abendblatt.de/hamburg/article118116233/Der-Bauerngarten-
eine-norddeutsche-Liebe.html.
In good condition. Left and lower edge slightly irregular. Tiny color losses in corners. Lower right with a subtle vertical rubbing. Tiny kinks along the left edge. Right edge with two unobtrusive scuffed spots, presumably from the framing.
The condition report was compiled in daylight with the help of an ultraviolet light and to the best of knowledge.
