Contemp. pigskin binding over wooden boards with rich floral blind- and roll tooling as well as 2 clasps and lettering. 2 (of 4) unnumb., 253 Roman numb. ll.VD 16, P 1881. - BM STC 644. - Adams N 45. - Ritter Cat. 1540. - Schmidt, Flach 37. - Muller II, 106, 42. - Early edition of the collection of life stories and deeds of saints, which was quite popular in the 15th and 16th century. Up until today, the writing, which is arranged according to the church's calendar, serves as an important source for research on saints. First released in Vicenza in 1493. - The nice woodcut by Urs Graf shows the resurrected Jesus with scars, who sends his disciples out into the world. Title border with vine branches and double eagle crest (cf. Mende on Baldung Grien 328). - Title in red and black. - Lacking two leaves a2 and a3 of the prolog. - Somewhat stained (some ll. stronger), with numerous marginalia by old hand, title and first leaf remargined (almost affecting image), 3 ll. with erased stamp, 2 ll. with longer tear, 1 l. with longer marginal split, rear endpaper with mended corner. Binding edgeworn, spine end with small mended splits, movable parts of clasps removed. From the library of the Catholic theologian Martin Königsdorfer (1752-1835). Fine copy of post incunable in two columns, richly adorned with initials in a likewise elaborately decorated binding.Early edition of this popular "Legend of Saints", a work which went through many editions in the late 15th and early 16th century, first printed 1493. With title woodcut border by Hans Baldung Grien and full-page woodcut by Urs Graf. Blindstamped pigskin over wooden boards with 2 brass clasps (movable clasps renewed). - Lacking leaves a2 and a3 of the prologue. Slightly stained (some leaves stronger), with numerous marginalia by old hand, title and first leaf remargined (close to the illustrations), 3 leaves with erased stamp, 3 leaves with tear (1 backed), back flying endpaper with rebacked cutout. Edges partly scraped, extremities of spine repaired. From the library of the Catholic theologian Martin Königsdorfer (1752-1835).
