Size of sheet 11,8 : 8,5 cm. 20 lines, rubricated, with red lombards, heightenings in red. Written in neat Litera Bastarda.I: Edition of this rare edification book that is not listed in the decisive bibliographies, it was published several times in Leiden, Delft, Utrecht and Antwerp between 1501 and 1539 (cf. Nijhof/Kronenberg under Boecxken van goeder devocien or under Couden, Die negen ). The text of this print largely resembles the editions by Adr. van Berghen, Antwerp 1506 (Nijhoff/K. 4317) and by Jan Severs, Leiden no date (Nijhoff/K. 438), however, the woodcuts had already been used by Hugo Jansz. van Woerden in an edition of Leven ons Heren (Leiden 1498, cf. Conway 30.1.1-50). - Lacking ll. a2, a7, c4, c5, d3 as well as last blank leaf. - II: Neatly written and complete manuscript with psalms and prayers from the surroundings of the Devotio Moderna. Contains 9 sections with prayers for souls in the bonfire, for dying people, trinity, holy sacraments etc. - Condition: Somewhat waterstained in places (few lombards with wiped colors), cropped close in places. Original endpapers with longer ownership entry of William Ashmead, dated 1851 loosely attached. All in all well-preserved.Very rare unrecorded edition of this Dutch devotional book containing among other texts and prayers, the texts of the "Oeffeninghe van den heiligen cruse", "Die ix couden die onse here ihesus christus leet" and "Die seven banden". Cf. Nijhoff/Kronenberg 438 and 4317 for other editions of this text, publ. between 1501 and 1539. - With large colored title woodcut and 7 (6 colored) full-page woodcuts in text (of 10), printed from blocks used by Hugo Jansz. van Woerden in an edition of the "Leven Ons Heren" (Leiden 1498; cf. Conway 30.1.1-50). 74 (of 80) nn. leaves. Gothic type, 20 lines, rubricated and with painted lombards in red and blue as well as 3 small fleuronne initials in red and blue. Mod. calf on raised bands with gilt edges. - Bound in at end a fine manuscript containing psalms and prayers of the Modern Devotion. Netherland, ca. 1500. 85 leaves, sheet size 11,8 : 8,5 cm, 20 lines, rubricated, with red lombards and titles in red. Written in litera bastarda, brown ink. - Partly some waterstaining (few lombards blurred), few leaves cropped close, else well-preserved. Attached the early endpapers with ownership remark by William Ashmead, dated 1851.
