"My sensitivity and conscience form a filter for the elements. […] Not as reflections of the trivial, but visions and desires of a universal awareness of life that I gain from reality. This is what I project onto my pictures and objects, I let them mature during the days of Zero.“
Otto Piene, quote from ex. cat. Otto Piene, Retrospektive 1952-1996, Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf, 1996, p. 17.

Essay
As of the 1960s Otto Piene began to experiment with fire, smoke and light. He uses their interplay for a common goal. In the process intention and desire, as well as arbitrariness and the material's independence enter in a balanced synthesis. It seems as if a filgree, watery shimmering bubble, its dark color in contrast with the light background, emerges from nowhere in the image center. The beauty and expressive power of this effect is underlined by the associative poetic title.
