Essay
Drawing is the only artistic medium that accompanied Andy Warhol as a central means of artistic expression through his whole life, except for an interruption between around 1963 and 1972, from his studies at Carnegie Institute of Technology up to the last weeks before his death. Warhol's drawings thereby document his artistic development in a more complete manner than any other medium. Remarkably the motives of his drawings are focused on the products of a consumer world that had been flourishing since the post-war years, as well as on the representation of the human form, whereas nature and landscape remain almost completely excluded. This may not only be due to Warhol's design studies and hist subsequent activity as commercial artist, but also to the fact that Warhol was a convinced city dweller throughout his life.
