Mathieu, the main representative of French Tachism, was inspired by various sources. His gestural style shows the influence of Hans Hartung and Wols, but also traces of East Asian calligraphy. The artist examines the immediate emotionally controlled and intuitive act of painting. This work shows how he employs the speed of the painting process and coincidence as stylistic device.
