Seltenes Werk über die Flechten in einem nahezu vollständigen Exemplar.
Erste Ausgabe, ursprünglich in Lieferungen erschienen. Selten in diesem Umfang. - Die schönen kolorierten Kupfertafeln nach Zeichnungen des Verfassers meist mit mehreren Darstellungen. - Georg Franz Hoffmann (auch Hofmann; 1760-1826) hatte ab 1792 die Professor für Botanik in Göttingen inne, ab 1804 bis zu seinem Tod in Moskau. Er führte Goethe während dessen Studienaufenthaltes Juni-August 1801 in Göttingen in die Kryptogamenkunde ein (vgl. Schmid, Goethe und die Naturwissenschaften 3985 Anm.). - Fehlt in Bd. III das Titelbl. mit Vignette von Heft 1 und das gesamte Heft Nr. 4 mit den Tafeln 67-72.
EINBAND: Späterer Halblederband mit goldgepr. Rücken- und Deckeltitel und Kopfgoldschnitt. 39 : 26 cm. - ILLUSTRATION: Mit 2 (von 3) wdh. gest. Titelvignetten und 67 (66 kolor.) Nearly complete copy of the work about lichen. Hoffmann was professor for botany in Göttingen from 1792 to 1804, and introduced Goethe into the world of Cryptogamae during his stay in Göttingen in 1801. - 2 vols. and 3 (of 4) issues of vol. III in 1 volume. With 2 (of 3) engr. title vignettes and 67 (66 col.). engr. plates (of 72; numb. 1-13, 13B, 14-66) after drawings by the author. Later half calf with gilt title on spine, top edge gilt. - Lacking in vol. III the title page with engr. vignette of the first issue and the complete issue no. 4 incl. the plates 67 to 72. - Here and there with irregularly trimmed margins, issue no. 1 of vol. II slightly shorter in size in the lower margin. Edges slightly rubbed in places.(R)
