Interessante Sammlung von Karikaturen, Gedichten und Pamphleten zum Aktien- und Börsenhandel, anläßlich des Zusammenbruchs von John Laws Notenbank 1720, der den ersten Aktien-Skandal der neueren Wirtschaftsgeschichte auslöste.

In phantasievollen Illustrationen wird die als Mississippi-Blase bekannte Wirtschaftskatastrophe auf die Schippe genommen, die, aufgrund von John Laws cleveren Vermarktungen, England, Frankreich und Holland erfaßte. Unter den Kupfern auch ein satirisches Kartenspiel mit 52 Figuren und 8 Kupfer aus dem Zwergen-Kabinett nach Callot-Vorlagen (Il Calotto resuscitato). - "This great Theatre of Folly .. is an exceedingly curious collection of emblematical plates and caricatures on the scheme of J. Law (whose portrait appears as the third plate) and the Mississippi Company (between 1718 and 1720) and the imitations of it in Holland, with fatal results. Not a few of the scenes here depicted have been reproduced in the New York Exchange. The engravings, which illustrate the rise and fall of the great speculation, are full of humor; many of them are exceedingly ludicrous, and some very obscene. They are finely engraved on copper, and are accompanied with full descriptions in prose and poetry" (Sabin). Sabin vermerkt, daß die Tafelanzahl zwischen 60 und 74 variiert.

An interesting collection of caricatures, poems, and pamphlets on stock and stock market trading, commemorating the collapse of John Law's Bank of England in 1720, which triggered the first stock scandal in modern economic history. With engr. frontispiece and 75 engr. plates and maps (61 double-page or folded). Contemp. spotted calf with gilt cover borders and centerpiece, and gilt spine. 40.5 : 25 cm. - Slightly fingerstained and foxed, some small wormtraces in the lower margins, few minim. marginal defects, 1 plate with a marginal tear (no image loss), 2 folding plates with a tear in the image, 1 plate with a small backing, 4 plates mounted. Binding with minor scraping, spine with a small defect. Overall a fine copy.
