Diese Originalausgabe ist seltener als der Sonderdruck von Bigelows Artikel, in dem 7 Absätze zu einem vorgeschlagenen Patent weggelassen werden. Der Band des Boston Journal war so selten und gesucht, daß Osler ihn erst kurz vor seinem Tod in den Händen hielt. "When this long-looked-for volume arrived in December, 1919, towards the end of his last illness, Sir Wm. Osler asked that the following note be inscribed in it: All things come to him who waits - but it was a pretty close shave this time! Start with the documents that magnetized into life an ancient practice - these pamphlets of Morton’s, Bigelow’s paper, Warren’s paper, and vol. XXXV of the Boston Medical and Surgical Journal. Put these together as the blastoderm from which the enormous literature has developed" (Osler). - Bigelow, fast 40 Jahre lang die dominierende Persönlichkeit in der Chirurgie Neuenglands, beobachtete am 16. Oktober 1846 im Massachusetts General Hospital, wie der Zahnarzt John C. Warren eine Operation am Kiefer unter Verwendung von Äther als Anästhetikum durchführte, das W.T.G. Morton verabreichte. Warren und Morton wollten das Verfahren patentieren lassen, während Bigelow sie zwang, ihre Entdeckung mitzuteilen, indem er die Errungenschaft umgehend am 3. November an die American Academy of Arts and Sciences verkündete.

Rücken unter Verwendung alten Materials restauriert. - PROVENIENZ: Exlibris des Mediziners Silas Cummings (1803-1882). - Exlibris des Chirurgen Ernst H. Latham, M. D. sowie dessen Namenszug auf dem Titelblatt. - Seit 1996 in süddeutschem Privatbesitz.

First edition. One of the most important publications in the history of medicine and surgery, in the rare original periodical issue. This original issue is rarer than the offprint of Bigelow's article, which omits seven paragraphs concerning a proposed patent. Contemp. half calf with red label on spine. - Partly slightly foxed and waterstained, ca. 10 leaves with slight ink traces in the upper corner, with 2 marginalia by an old hand (Latham?), endpapers gluestained. Spine restored using old material. - Ex libris of the physician Silas Cummings (1803-1882). - Ex libris of the surgeon Ernst H. Latham, M. D. and his name on the title page.
