Erste Ausgabe. - "Die Zeichnungen sind zumeist wissenschaftlich-naturalistisch gehalten .. So entstand in Gesners Tierbüchern ein typo- und xylographisch, wie wissenschaftlich hochbedeutendes Monumentalwerk" (Leemann-v. E.). - "His History of animals , is an encyclopedia of contemporary knowledge, intended to replace not only medieval compilations but even Aristotele's work of the same title. Like any modern encyclopaedist Gesner drew upon the best sources of information available to him, and also borrowing a great deal from his predecesors .. Gesner's encyclopedia was enriched by crude but often lively woodcuts. Most were prepared specially for this work" (PMM).
EINBAND: Lederband des 17. Jhs. mit Goldschnitt, Rücken unter Verwendung alten goldgepr. Materials erneuert. Folio. 50,5 : 26 cm. - ILLUSTRATION: Mit Titel-Wappenholzschnitt, Holzschitt-Initiale und 75 Textholzschnitten (st. 82). - KOLLATION: 20 Bll., 1092 (st. 1104) S., 5 (st. 6) Bll. - ZUSTAND: Ohne die S. 1-4, 23/24, 163/164, 409/410, 443/444 sowie das letzte Bl. mit der Druckermarke. - Tls. leicht fleckig und gebräunt, 5 Bll. mit Randeinriß, 1 Bl. mit kl. Randabriß, 2 Bll. Register mit Eckläsuren, letztes Bl. mit Eintragung von alter Hd., erstes Textbl. gestempelt. Einbd. berieben und bestoßen, Kanten ausgebessert. Breitrandiges, fein regliertes Exemplar.

With armorial woodcut on title, woodcut initial and 75 woodcuts in text (of 82). 17th cent. calf, spine renewed, using old material. - Lacking pages 1-4, 23/24, 163/164, 409/410, 443/444 and last leaf with publisher's imprint. Partly slightly stained and browned, 5 leaves with marginal tear, 1 leaf with small marginal defective spot, 2 leaves of the index with defective corners, last leaf with entry by old hand, first text leaf stamped. Binding rubbed and bumped, edges restored. Broad margined and ruled copy.
