Jaroslav Serpan studied biology and mathematics at the Sorbonne in Paris, as a painter he was self-taught. He joined the surrealist movement in 1946, however, under the influence of Antoni Tàpies and Wols he turned to the Informel as of 1948. He placed pastose structures, which emerge from a dense entanglement of black particles that either cluster rhythmically or drift apart, in front of a mostly monochrome background. Our work from the early 1960s, which is accentuated by green and yellow tones, is exemplary of these characteristics. [JS].
