Die Hochzeit der aus Italien hervorgegangenen Insularien war das 15.-17. Jahrhundert. Diese Sonderform der Atlanten bildete die Welt als eine Ansammlung von Inseln ab und diente vor allem als Handbuch für Reisende und Seeleute. Porcacchis Isole famose reiht sich ein in die berühmten Werke seiner italienischen Landsleute Buondelmonti, Sonetti und Bordone, ist jedoch erstmals mit Kupferstichen statt Holzschnitten ausgestattet. Das Werk war so gefragt, daß es insgesamt 7 Auflagen erlebte, die letzte erschien über 100 Jahre später im Jahr 1686. - Die in Zusammenarbeit mit dem aus Padua stammenden, hauptsächlich in Venedig tätigen Kupferstecher und Verleger Girolamo Porro geschaffenen Karten zeigen u. a. die Welt in Oval und als Seekarte (Shirley 127 und 128), eine frühe Darstellung von Nord-Amerika (Burden 42), Karten von Island, Irland, Schottland, England, Gotland, der holländischen Küste, Elba, Mallorca, Menorca, Sardinien, Griechenland, Korsika, Sizilien, Malta, Zypern, Rhodos, Kreta, Korfu, Kuba, Hispagnola, Molukken, Sri Lanka; daneben die "Insel-Städte" Venedig und Mexiko-Stadt.
EINBAND: Dunkelgrün gefärbter Kalblederband des frühen 20. Jhs. mit Rückenvergoldung. 4to. 29 : 20 cm. - ILLUSTRATION: Mit qualitativ hochwertig von alter Hand ersetztem, illustriertem Titelblatt und 30 Kupferkarten im Text von Girolamo Porro sowie Holzschnitt-Druckermarke am Ende. - KOLLATION: 10 (st 12) nn. Bll. (d. l. w.), 117 S., 1 Bl. - ZUSTAND: Titel von alter Hand ersetzt, ohne Widmungsblatt. Schottland-Kupfer kopfstehend gedruckt. - Stellenw. leicht gebräunt und (finger-)fleckig, erstes Textblatt mit großen Tintenflecken, Druckermarke tls. berieben. Insgesamt schönes Exemplar der seltenen Erstausgabe.

First edition of Porcacchi's popular atlas of the islands of the world. One of the most famous of the Italian isolarios from the 15th to 17th centuty, and the first to contain copperplate maps (by G. Porro) instead of woodcuts. The atlas was an eminent success and was published in seven editions between 1572 and 1686. With woodcut printer's device and 30 engr. maps in the text, including an early depiction of North America and 2 world charts. Early 20th cent. green calf with gilt spine. - Lacking title (replaced in high quality by old hand) and dedication leaf at the beginning. Scotland copperplate printed upside down, printer's device rubbed. Slightly browned and stained in places, first page with large ink stains. Overall, a fine copy of this rare first edition.
