Kenneth Noland counts among the main representativs of American Color Field Painting. After he had completed his studies at the Black Mountain College and made first steps in geometrical abstraction, as well as an occupation with Pollock's and de Kooning's gestural "abstract expressionism", Noland attained a style that was again based on a geometric system. His illustrations of rings, angles and stripes also found their realization in form of his "shaped canvases". In the late 1960s he made the first horizontal stripe images with a width of up to seven meters. This work stands in their tradition.
