Japan in der europäischen Kartographie

Johannes Metellus
Iaponia regnum.

- "The French cartographer Jean Matal, who worked primarily in Germany under his Latin name, created the maps for the German edition (of Boteros Theatrum ) following the model of the Theatrum of Ortelius, whom he knew personally. His map of Japan is the earliest known copy of Teixeira's map, which had appeared in Ortelius the previous year" (Walter S. 188).

- Meurer Bot 17.

Early and very rare map of Japan by J. Metellus, the first to follow Ortelius and Teixeira in his depiction of the region, also showing Corea as an island. From Giovanni Botero's "Theatrum, oder Schawspiegel" (first German edition 1596 or second ed. 1600) with German text on verso. - Tanned and printed with slight tone, with slight waterstains to the wide margins. Centrefold skilfully reinforced.
