Zweite bei Roville in Lyon erschienene französische Ausgabe von Medinas wichtigem Werk, dessen spanische Erstausgabe 1545 nach Erscheinen schnell in verschiedene europäische Sprachen übersetzt und zum Standardwerk für Navigation und Seefahrt wurde. "The author, who was with Cortés, may be said to have been the founder of the literature of seamanship. He was entrusted by the King with the examination of pilots and sailing-masters for the West Indies, taught navigation, and was held in high esteem as a cosmographer. This book was most popular with the successors of Columbus" (Church I, 219). - Die Holzschnitte zeigen unter anderem eine kleine Weltkarte im Rund, eingerahmt von acht Windköpfen, mit Europa, Afrika, Asien und sowie dem unbezeichneten Nord- und Südamerika (vgl. Shirley 84: "not as far as I am aware in the editions printed in France"; wdh. auf S. 211 ohne die Windköpfe), sowie versch. Schiffstypen und zahlr. Medina's main work, the Spanish first edition was published in 1545, was soon translated into various European languages and became a standard work of navigation and seafaring. With 90 text woodcuts (lacking the folding engr. map "Nouveau Monde" by N. de Nicolai). Old blind-tooled vellum with later calf label and 2 calf clasps. Small 4to. - With isolated stains, with carefully restored marginal blemishes, half title with mended marginal tear, title with 2 small ownership stamps. Newly bound in contemp. vellum with later label.
