PROVENANCE: From artist's estate.

In his youth Heinrich Schlief met Christian Rohlfs and Wilhelm Morgner, who was also active in Soest. His teachers and parents rejected his wish to become a painter. So Schlief learned a trade and taught himself painting. He worked in isolation and created an impressive oeuvre comprising around 200 paintings and more than 2000 prints. The Expressionism found in the art of Rohlfs and especially Morgner was evolved by Heinrich Schlief to a very own style, which made him, along with Morgner, one of the most important representatives of Westphalian avant-garde. This landscape is particularly captivating for its subdued colors with black contours, which is characteristic of his works from the 1920s. Schlief puts just a few accents in blue and thus adds thrilling contrasts and intensive luminance. [DB].
