Berthold Hellingrath studied at the Dresden art school from 1899 to 1905 as master student of the Impressionist Gotthard Kuehl. As of 1925 he taught architecture painting and architectural proportions at the Leibniz University in Hanover, where he was appointed honorary professor in 1928. Defamed as "degenerate" Hellingrath was excluded from the 'Reichskunstkammer' (Art Council) in 1937. With his painting Hellingrath followed the path of Paul Cézanne and French Impressionism. Cézanne's influence becomes obvious when observing our "Landschaft mit Eisenbahnbrücke" (Landscape with Railroad Bridge): The clear forms and intensive colors that Hellingrath masterly stages through dark contours clearly speak for this thesis. Unfortunately, a large part of Hellingrath's work was destroyed in WW II. The artist died in 1954 of the consequences of a traffic accident in Hanover. [KH].
