Each front wrapper numbered by P. Gonin as well as inscribed and signed, woodcuts in black and red and red chalk with black Maillol's monogram stamp. - "Maillol had been commissioned by Philippe Gonin to illustrate Virgil's Géorgiques .. which finally saw the light of day in two volumes in 1950. He designed more than a hundred woodcuts, including initial letters. In point of fact Count Kessler had intended the book to be a sequel to the Eclogues (1926) published in Germany, but it was finally left to Gonin to persuade Maillol to complete the illustrations which he had done by 1943 .. the majority of the woodcuts were 'executed by craftsmen after Maillol's drawings on the blocks, since at that time his eyes were not strong enough for the cutting'." (Strachan p. 92).
