Aldus-Drucke. - Martialis, M. V., (Epigrammata). Venedig, "in aedibus Aldi" (Aldus Manutius), Dezember 1501. Schweinslederband auf 3 Bünden mit reicher Blind- und Rollenprägung (Allegorien Justitia, Lucretia und Prudentia mit Datum 1539), VDeckel mit schwarzgepr. Monogramm "IRH" und Datum "1539". 8vo. 190 nn. Bll. (st. 191).

Berlin 68. - Adams M 689. - BM STC, Italian Books S. 420. - Frühe Aldine, der vierte Druck in Aldus' Kursivschrift, die sein Schriftgießer und Stempelschneider Francesco Griffo 1501 erfunden hatte. Der erste Druck mit diesen Lettern ist die berühmte Vergil-Ausgabe von 1501. - Ohne das Titelblatt für diese erste Martial-Ausgabe bei Aldus (noch ohne Druckermarke), stattdessen eingeb. das Titelbl. der zweiten Ausgabe von 1517 mit der schönen Aldus-Druckermarke Anker und Delphin (Kristeller 175). Ohne das letzte w. Bl. - Tlw. geringfüg. fleckig, wenige alte Unterstreichungen, Innendeckel mit zeitgenöss. Eintragung in Latein und Griechisch sowie bibliogr. Vermerk des bekannten schwedischen Buchsammlers Graf Per Hierta , dat. 1900. Einbd. tls. minim. fleckig und gering bestoßen. Exlibris. Insges. gutes Exemplar.

Early Aldine, the fourth printing in which Aldus used his famous cursive type (italics). Contemp. pigskin on raised bands, richly blind- and rollstamped (allegories Justitia, Lucretia and Prudentia) and with black-tooled initials "IRH" and the year "1539". - Lacking last blank and the title-leaf for this first Martial-edition by Aldus (yet without device), replaced by the title-leaf of the 2nd edition from 1517 with the beautiful Aldine device. - Partly minor staining, few old underlinings, pastedown with contemp. inscription in Latin and Greek, further a bibliogr. annotation by the famous Swedish book-collector count Per Hierta, dated 1900. Binding partly minim. stained and bumped. Ex-libris.
