III and IV each in two parts. - Comprehensive account of the stay of the French Dominican missionary Jean Baptiste Labat in the Caribbean from 1693 to 1705. Mainly a description of the Lesser Antilles with the islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique regarding population, geography, zoology and botany - etc. Cultivation of tobacco, sugar cane, indigo, cocoa, bananas and coconuts, - partly also giving a first account of some of the smaller islands, also mentioning slavery. The plates show mostly plants and animals, native Indians, other people and their culture, ships, the maps show the Caribbean, Guadeloupe, Martinique, St. Christopher, St. Domingo and Barbados. - Just thumbed in places, all in all three plates and 2 text ll with small, mostly mended blemishes, 1 vol. with small trace of damp to preliminaries, 1 title and the two frontispieces mounted, 2 front endpapers renewed or reinforced in former times. Boards scraped, 1 vol. with small restored spot on joint and lower spine end. All in all well-preserved and unusually clean copy of the travelogue in decorative contemp. bindings.
