Binding designed by Ulber in Berlin. - Der Findling is the third drama by Ernst Barlach that was released by Paul Cassirer. Barlach wrote the play in 1920/21 under the impressions of miseries and uproars in Germany. - "The woodcuts are made in simple designs directly from action in the text. All facial characterizations show brutal faces and worn bodies. The only exception is when the girl shows the radiant child to the audience. Only she is straight and unbent: the poor circling refugees are squat and crooked. The woodcuts seem a premonition of the future and a message from the past. The play seems very contemporary." (Reed) - All plates of the extra suite mounted in upper margin. - Binding slightly bowed, case with blemishes. Foxing only slightly affecting the endpapers, else fine, clean and broad-margined copy of the rare de-luxe edition.
