"In 1736 the commission's expedition began its work, principally in the regions of Quito and Guayaquil. Complementary scientific observations were made of the the speed of sound and of various aspects of astronomy, physics, geography, biology and geology" (DSB VII, 183). - The coppers show details of maps and plans, navigation and measuring instruments, costumes and dresses etc., 8 Tafeln additionally with illustrations of the history of the Inca (from the Garcilasso edition from 1737). - 5 plates browned, vol. II with small trace of worming to the gutter at the beginning. Binding scuffed, edgeworn, joints brittle. However, all in all good, inside clean and broad-margined copy.
