Straßencafé. 1930s.
Oil on cardboard.
Signed lower left. 68,8 : 49,8 cm (27 : 19,6 in). From 1921 Hugo Scheiber regularly showed work at the exhibitions mounted by Herwarth Walden’s “Der Sturm” gallery. Characteristic of his style are compositions dissolved into geometric colour surfaces accentuated in black with the figures of passers-by, visitors to the café, musicians, dancers and acrobats represented in a way that is highly expressive and tinged with humour. [NB]
EXPERTISE: We are grateful to Barbara Benjas, Berlin, for her help in cataloguing this lot. The work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné

With minor ripples. Edges partly unevenly trimmed as well as minimally bumped, partly with tiny colour losses. Lower edge with larger disruptions of the uppermost cardboard layer. Minimally discoloured, with a few tiny paper adhesions.
