Kleine Daphne. 1918.
Bronze with red brown patina. On marble base.
Buhlmann 63. Height: 29 cm (11,4 in), without base. cm ( in)In Daphne, Renée Sintenis gave form to what is probably the most beautiful expression of female grace. Daphne, daughter of the river god Peneios, was pursued by Apollo but the gods heard her supplication and she was protected by being transformed into a laurel tree. Sintenis has merely suggested transfiguration with the foliage about Daphne’s legs and in her hair, concentrating instead on fragile corporeality and subtly anticipating the ultimate metamorphosis in the figure’s elongated limbs. [KD]

Additional copies can be found at the following public collections (a selection): National Gallery Berlin, Harvard Coll. Cambridge/Mass., Museum am Ostwall, Dortmund, Wallraf-Richartz-Museum, Cologne, Kaiser Wilhelm Museum, Krefeld
In good condition. The uppermost hand probably minimally bent. Marble base with small loss at one corner as well as puttied.
